Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) have been recognised as an important issue worldwide, with leading medical bodies and government agencies taking a proactive stance on their prevention and control.

Various countries worldwide have also introduced legislation and guidelines to support HAI prevention. An amendment to the Federal Law in Germany, passed in 2011, has sought to improve the quality of hygiene in hospitals and to reduce the number of hospital associated infections each year.
