Annual HIS conference examines Infection Prevention strategies

Methods to tackle the cost and health issues from healthcare associated infections were discussed at the annual Healthcare Infection Society Conference, held in Lyon in November.

Over 500 delegates were in attendance to listen to talks on a wide range of topics, including the costs that come with healthcare associated infections, and strategies to prevent and control the spread of pathogens causing these infections.

Study finds environmental cleaning as an important accompaniment to hand hygiene to stop the spread of infection

The long-term reduction in cases of both C. Difficile and MRA after Automated Area Decontamination methods were introduced at a hospital in Britain, were high on the agenda at a symposium during the Healthcare Infection Society 2014 Conference. The symposium focussed on tackling HAIs through the use of advanced Infection Prevention solutions.

A study for The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) has found that while hand hygiene is beneficial in the fight against infection, fewer pathogens would spread if an improved environmental cleaning strategy was introduced as well. The report found that both methods need to be increased and that in higher risk acquisition situations a strategy to improve terminal cleaning should take priority.
